|Digital mapping all together|

Local people need new & easy ways of using digital mapping technologies to transform their neighbourhoods. Our objective is to combine the collective experience of community mapping sessions with the benefits of digital mapping in a new digital tool
There are very powerfull online mapping tools like ushahidi.com or openstreetmaps.org available, however they are designed for one-user per device scenarios. Organizing collective in-person mapping sessions with them is cumbersome as either the participants use their digital devices individually or one person is dedicated to transcribe what the group is mapping using one device. Our challenge is to develop a touch-based digital tool to be used by many people at the same time in in-person community mapping sessions. "Digital mapping all together" tool will allow easy interaction, crowd-sourcing and data reuse, empowering citizens for understanding and transforming their local communities. Our tool will be based on low-cost hardware devices and existing open-software technologies.
"Digital mapping all together" will be an open solution and proposes a low-cost hardware implementation using existing domestic technologies, such as projectors and motion sensing input devices, and an interface layer on top of existing open source online mapping tools for generating a multi-user in-person experience. Resulting in several people being able to visualize, interact and collect geo-positioned data at the same time on the same projected surface.
Target group and social impact
Community mapping sessions are a fantastic way of gathering collective knowledge about our cities. These events normally become the catalyst of initiatives for transforming social, economic and environmental aspects in our neighbourhoods. Local communities find great difficulties in accessing and taking advantage of available mapping technology. "Digital mapping all together" will empower local groups in more effective and easy to use community mapping sessions. Due to the digital nature of the collected data, it could be easily and quickly repurpose in websites, planning proposals, or digital platforms for debate. Additionally, the cost of a community mapping event using our tool will be cheaper since there is no need of printing large-size maps in each session.
