|SelbstBeStimmt: Empowered Singer|
| Posted on 30/05/2014 - 21:36|
An online platform to empower classically trained singers. Seen as expendable, artists are relegated to second-class citizens within the music world, jeopardizing classical music’s long-term sustainability. SelbstBeStimmt will change that system.
Local and national governments pay out large amounts of money to support the arts in Germany and the EU. But with little to no transparency or accountability, theaters perpetuate unfair working conditions for the artists they employ while gladly absorbing the financial support of Europe’s citizens. While it is clear that the arts and theaters must be supported, it is also clear that the current situation is unsustainable. Change must begin from within, by making the voices of those best acquainted with the day-to-day realities of cultural inefficiency heard. There have been attempts (see Revolution der Künstler, ArtbutFair) to challenge the status quo, but none has managed to create lasting change because they perpuate the top-down mentality. SelbstBeStimmt will change that.
SelbstBeStimmt will provide a platform for singers (and, eventually, dancers, actors, etc) to provide direct feedback and evaluation of agents and theaters. Using Open Data to create a rating system evaluating working conditions, efficiency, wages, etc, the collective knowledge of the artists will bring much-needed transparency and accountability to a closed world.
There are three phases to the project: 1. collect data from the artists regarding these different categories, 2. use said information to raise awareness among artists and the public in order to 3. fuel changes to the system using internal, political, and public pressure.
SelbstBeStimmt will also help politicians and consituents, allowing them a glimpse into the daily realities of the organizations they vote to fund.
Target group and social impact
SelbstBeStimmt will initially and most directly benefit the artists themselves, those working every day to create the on-stage/screen product. They will have * greater knowledge regarding their rights * greater bargaining power regarding wages * a sense of community and solidarity. SelbstBeStimmt will eventually benefit the politicians and the citizens, by allowing for: * more responsible use of public funds * greater transparency and more responsible democracy * a sense of “ownership” of the theaters SelbstBeStimmt will serve the art form by: * increasing sustainability through supporting more effective and responsible use of resources * increasing awareness and, hopefully, interest in the genre * engaging public support to maintain this jeopardized art form.
